day set March 24
The Barrow County Food
Pantry, in partnership with
The Food Bank of Northeast
Georgia, will hold a Food
Distribution Day on
Thursday, March 24, begin
ning at 8 a.m.
The event is held rain or
shine at Holly Hill Mall
on Athens Street in Winder
(across from Hill’s Ace
Hardware).
This is open to all Barrow
County residents who meet
USDA income eligibili
ty requirements. Proof of
Barrow County residency
is required and the food is
distributed on a “first-come,
first-served” basis.

‘Most Influential’
Burrell one of 100 recognized by Georgia Trend

A Barrow County native was
recently recognized as one of
the most influential people in
the state. Georgia Trend mag
azine recently announced that
Carol Burrell, president and
CEO of Northeast Georgia
Health System, is one of its 100
Most Influential Georgians.
This is the second year in a
row that Burrell, a Carl native,
has been named to the list. She
and her husband, Steve, now live
in Hall County. The two have
two children. Lee Burrell and
Bradee Aderholt.
After graduating from
Winder-Barrow High School,
Burrell went into the health
care industry, receiving her
undergraduate degrees in med
ical technology from Georgia
Southern University and Emory
University. She later received her
master’s in healthcare adminis
tration from Central Michigan
University.
She started her career as a
medical technologist at Emory
University, and later transferred
to St. Vincent’s Healthcare in
Jacksonville. Fla. She later went
into pharmaceutical sales, then
returned to St. Vincent’s to help
develop an outreach laboratory.
Burrell started out her career
as a clinician but later became
interested in the business-side
of healthcare. She started at
Northeast Georgia Health
System in 1999.

Basketball’s Big Stage:
SEASON TO REMEMBER
A basketball season which began with hopes of getting to the state tourna
ment and ending a long postseason drought ended with the Winder-Barrow
High School Lady Bulldoggs reaching the state championship game in Macon.
While WBHS fell 49-48 to Southwest DeKalb, the 2015-2016 season will long
be remembered by the players, coaches, school and community, See today’s

Qualifying
continues
in Barrow

Candidates in Barrow County
began making it official on Monday
as local qualifying began.
Several Republican incum
bents qualified Monday including
Jud Smith (sheriff), Regina Brock
McIntyre (clerk of superior court),
Melinda Wall Williams (tax com
missioner), Tammy Brown (probate
judge), Pat Graham (commission
chairman), Kenny Shook (District
2 commissioner), Roger Wehunt
(District 3 commissioner), David
Crosby (coroner), Joe Goodman,
(District 1 commissioner), Rickey
Bailey (Board of Education, District
6), Rolando Alvarez (BOE, District
8, at large) and Garey Huff (BOE.
District 2.)
Other Republicans qualifying
Monday included Caroline Power
Evans and Tim Sanders (chief mag
istrate), William J. Brown (District
2 commissioner) and Tim Walker
(sheriff).
Republican candidates qualify
ing Tuesday included John McKay
(BOE. District 8, at large) and Lynn
Stevens (BOE. District 5). Qualifying
continues through Friday.
Easter Egg hunt
set for Saturday
The annual “Eggcellent Easter
Egg Hunt” in downtown Auburn
will be held Saturday, March 12.
The event, sponsored by the
Auburn Public Library, will be
held from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
A bunny petting zoo and other
activities will be set up for the
attendees, organizers said.
BOE gets preview of
amphitheater design

Work is continuing on the
design of a county amphithe
ater.
The Barrow County Board
of Education got a look at pos
sible design and floor plans
during its March 1 meeting.
The current design shows an
outdoor amphitheater near the
Sims Academy of Innovation
and Technology.
It would include a 4,000
square-foot stage and five lawn
terraces with concrete cap seat
ing.
The lawn terraces are sev
en-feet from front-to-back as
currently designed.
The stage could hold 275
people, to accommodate bands,
choruses and symphony pro
grams. The concrete seating
could accommodate 830.
