Wishes Come True
Local boy granted trip to Disney World
By Alex Pace
Journal Reporter
A local boy’s wish recently
came true when he got a trip to
Disney World. Elijah Power, a
Barrow County boy, was grant
ed a trip to the park through
Make-A-Wish Georgia.
Power was diagnosed with
a rare cancerous brain tumor
when he was 18 months old.
There are only 41 other similar
cases diagnosed in the world.
After his diagnosis, Power
started one year of che
motherapy at Scottish Rite
Hospital, and later started pro
ton radiation treatments at the
University of Florida Proton
Center in Jacksonville. Power's
grandmother, Wanda Harris,
said the months of treatment
were difficult.
“All of this was very trau
matic,’’ said Harris.
Power continued chemother
apy until January 2015 and has
been in remission for the past
14 months.
“His doctor was flabbergast
ed that we’ve been in remission
for 14 months,’’ said Harris. “It
is quite amazing.”
Power is still monitored to
make sure the cancer hasn’t
returned and receives occu
pational and physical ther
apy. Now three-years-old,
Power attends a special class
at Statham Elementary School
that meets three days a week.
“It has been a blessing,” said
Harris. “He loves it.”
