Several races will be decided
in next Tuesday’s primary elec
tion as Barrow County voters
make their decisions at the ballot
box.
Advance voting continues
through Friday. Voters who do
not vote early can still do it the
old-fashioned way on primary
day May 24. In the Republican
primary, there are contested races
for sheriff, county commission
chairman, state representative
and seats on the board of com
missioners and board of educa
tion.
In the race for sheriff, two-term
incumbent Jud Smith is being
challeneged by Tim Walker. The
winner of the primary will be the
winner as there is no Democratic
candidate running.
Former Barrow County
District 5 commissioner Billy
Parks is challenging incumbent
May 24 primary
Pat Graham for county chairman.
In the at-large seat on the board
of education, Rolando Alvarez is
facing challenger John McKay.
Barrow County District 2 com
missioner Kenny Shook faces
challenger Bill Brown, a former
two-term commissioner.
District 3 commissioner Roger
Wehunt, who won a special elec
tion earlier this year to fill the
unexpired term of Steve Worley,
faces primary opposition from
Jeff Hatcher.
Long-term popular state rep
resentative Terry England faces
opposition for the first time from
Lucretia Conseulla Hughes.
There are also contested pri
mary races on the Republican
ballot for United State Senate and
Public Service Commissioner.
U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson
has two primary challengers in
Mary Kay Bacallao and Derrick
Grayson. Bacallao competed in
a crowded primary in 2014 for
state school superintendent while
Grayson ran for the U.S. Senate
that year.
There are no contested local
Democratic races although there
is a three-candidate race for U.S.
Senate between Jim Barksdale,
Cheryl Copeland and John
Coyne. James Knox qualified for
the race but has since dropped
out.
