Ike Waters
Winder
Ike Humprie Waters, 74, of Winder,
died Friday, October 5, 2007.
He was bom on July 9, 1933, the
son of the lade Ode and Lenora Hill
Waters. He was Baptist and a mem
ber of the Hebron Baptist Church of
Dacula. Mr. Waters was preceded in
death by a brother, Howard Water;
and sisters, Frenza Timms and Jane
Holbrook.
Survivors include three step
children; brothers, Charles Waters,
Woodstock, Ed Waters, Atlanta,
J.O. Waters, Raleigh, N.C., and
Gene Waters, Roanoke, Ala.; sisters,
Hortense Elder, Winder, and Ann
Brisco, Athens; and a number of
nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held
Saturday, October 13, at 11 a.m„ at
Smith Memory Chapel with the Rev.
Tracy Reynolds officiating. The body
was cremated.

Berthaleen Duck
Braselton
Berthaleen Parten Duck, 91, of
Braselton, died Sunday, October 7,
2007.
Born in Barrow County, she was
the daughter of the
late Warren R. and
Eula Mae Parten.
She was a home
maker and a mem
ber of Zion Baptist
Church. Mrs. Duck
was preceded in
death by her hus
band, Eugene Preston Duck; and a
son, Jack Duck.
Survivors include sons and daugh-
ter-in-law, Glenn and Pam Duck and
David Duck, all of Braselton; four
grandchildren; and five great-grand
children.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday, October 9, in the chapel of
Evans Funeral Home with the Rev.
Mike Phillips officiating. Burial was
in the Zion Baptist Church cem
etery. Pallbearers were Mike Duck,
Phil Duck, Terry Duck, Allen Duck,
Tommy Parten and Butch Parten.
Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson,
was in charge of arrangements.

Jerry Holcomb
Jefferson
Jerry Holcomb, 41, of Jefferson,
died Thursday, October 6, 2007.
Born in Gwinnett County, he was
the son of the late Virgil and Ann
Day Holcomb. He was a retired truck
drive. Mr. Holcomb was preceded in
death by a sister, Raenell Holcomb;
brother, Jimmy “Mario” Holcomb;
and brother-in-law, Jimmy Dorsey.
Survivors include brothers and
sisters-in-law, Wayne and Edwinna
Holcomb, Homer, Ronald Holcomb
and Donald Holcomb, Danny Joe
Holcomb, all of Hoschton, Joe and
Renee’ Holcomb, Commerce, Tony
and Julie Holcomb, Winder; sisters,
Lera Dorsey, Shirley James and Jean
Holcomb, all of Hoschton; and a
number of nieces, nephews, great-
nieces and great-nephews, includ
ing niece Hope Holcomb and great-
niece, Alanna Dorsey.
Funeral services were held Tuesday,
October 9, in the chapel of Carter
Funeral Home with the Revs. Carroll
Pruitt and Everest Carlisle offici
ating. Burial was in the Hoschton
Cemetery.

‘Bob’ Appleby
Jefferson
Robert Travis “Bob” Appleby, 80,
of Jefferson, died Monday, October
8, 2007.
He was born on March 19, 1927,
and was the son of
the late George D.
and Annie Stockton
Appleby. He gradu
ated from Jefferson’s
Martin Institute in 1943, and enlisted
in the United States Navy, earning a
combat medal for his service abroad
the U.S.S. Davidson, a destroyer/
mine sweeper, on the Yellow Sea dur
ing World War II. He graduated with
a bachelor of electrical engineering
degree from the Georgia Institute of
Technology in 1950. He enjoyed a
45-year career in the industrial pump
business, primarily with Fairbanks
Morse Company, holding the posi
tion of national sales manager of
the pump division in Kansas City,
and the electrical division in Beloit,
Wisconsin. He was a deacon and
elder in the Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Appleby was preceded in death
by his first wife, Lynn Cooper; and
a brother.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara
Johnson Tooke; children, Robert
Travis Appleby Jr., Chip Tooke and
Susan Koles; grandsons, Travis
Appleby and Asher and Eli Koles;
sister, Ann Appleby Jarrett; and lov
ing nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held
Wednesday, October 10, at Jefferson
Presbyterian Church.

Phillip Cochran
Homer
Phillip Q. Cochran, 55, of Homer,
died Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at a
private care facility.
He was born on September 11,
1952, in Habersham County, and was
the son of Mildred Aaron Cochran of
Homer and the late Julian Cochran.
He was a member of the Damascus
Baptist Church and a former machine
operator with Westinghouse Airbrake
Company.
Survivors in addition to his moth
er include daughters, Quintina Dee
Cochran Owens, Sugar Hill, Jennifer
Leigh Cochran Addison, Toccoa;
sons, Matthew Cochran and Jeremy
Cochran, both of Mt. Airy; brother,
James Cochran, Homer; grandchil
dren, Bryson and Kaine Addison,
Toccoa.
Funeral services were held
Thursday, October 4, at Whitfield
Funeral Home with the Revs. Roy
Rogers and Gene Todd officiating.
Burial was in the Damascus Baptist
Church Cemetery.

Baldwin, Ga. 30511.

Winder
James D. House, 72, of Winder,
died Thursday, October 4, 2007.
Bom in Barrow County, he was
the son of the late _____ _
G.W. and Mary B.
House. He was a self ~
employed electrician —
and plumber, and was
owner of House & Sons. He was a
veteran having served in the United
States Navy during the Korean War.
Mr. House was preceded in death by
his wife, Polly House; a son, Tony
House; sister, Sara Sims; grandson,
Justin House.
Survivors include a son and daugh-
ter-in-law, Todd and Lisa House,
Leesburg; daughter and fiance, Paula
House and Phil Wright; daughters-in-
law, Loisetta House, Lavonia, Susan
Dubry, Largo, Fla.; grandchildren,
Michael House, Tiffany Vanderford,
Elizabeth House, Morgan House,
Tiffany Dubry; great-grandchildren,
Savannah Berns and Jacob House;
brother, John House, Dahlonega.
Funeral services were held Sunday,
October 7, at Smith Memory Chapel
with Pastors Tommy Baker and Dave
Fahner officiating. Burial was in
Barrow Memorial Gardens.

Lloyd Hazlett
Winder
Lloyd David Hazlett, 53, of Winder,
died Friday, October 5, 2007.
Born in Gary County Pa., he was
the son of Lloyd Hazlett of Vernago,
Pa., and the late Lorain Black Hazlett.
He was of Christian faith and was a
member of the Roofers Union.
Survivors include significant
other, Judith Pristello; sons, Lloyd
D. Hazlett Jr., Albin, Pa., and Kevin
Hazlett, Union City, Pa.; daughter,
Ashley Lorain Hazlett, Winder; six
grandchildren; brother, William
Hazlett, Erie, Pa.,; sisters, Sherry
Martin, Michigan, and Sharon
Cooper, Meadville, Pa.
Funeral services will be held at a
later date in Pennsylvania.

Ron Wright
Batesville
Ron Wright, 56, of the Batesville
Community, died Friday, October 5,
2007, at his residence, following an
extended illness.
Born in Spaulding County on
September 17, 1951, he was the son
of the late Iverson and Mary Watson
Wright. He was a well respected and
dedicated retired lieutenant with the
DeKalb County Police Department,
having retired after 30 years of ser
vice. He was a member of First
Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville.
He was an amateur ham radio opera
tor who enjoyed gardening, reading
and adored Siberian Huskies, accord
ing to loved ones.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara
Wright, Batesville; daughters, Lisa
Wright, Oakwood, Aimee Palmer,
Clarkesville, and Rachel Tang,
Duluth; son, David Wright, Monroe;
sisters, Jenny Jones, Snellville, and
Jackie Christopher, Barnesville; and
six grandchildren.
Memorial services were held
Monday, October 8, at First
Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville
with the Rev. Lisa L. Graves officiat
ing.

Margaret Lay
Winder
Margaret Lay, 78, of Winder, died
Thursday, October 4, 2007, at her
residence.
A native of Whorton, Texas, she
was the daughter of the late Glenn
and Emma Zipprian. She was a
member of Chapel Christian Church
and was a retired sales associate of
Belk’s Department Store. Mrs. Lay
was preceded in death by a daughter,
Charlotte Lay; son, Bryant Lay; and
grandson, Justin House.
Survivors include her husband,
Jim Lay, Winder; daughters, Glenda
Ruskoski, Birmingham, Ala., and
Susan Dubry, Largo, Fla.; son,
Robert Lay, Knoxville, Tenn.; sister,
Patricia Smith, Newport News, Va.;
four grandchildren; and six great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Monday, October 8, in the chapel of
Carter Funeral Home with the Rev.
Emmett Carroll officiating. Burial
was in Chapel Christian Church
cemetery.

Lucille Hunter Bell, 97, died
Sunday, October 7, 2007.
She was bom in Barrow County
and was the daugh
ter of the late C.W.
and Clara Malcomb
Hunter. Mrs. Bell
was preceded in
death by her hus
band, Gurnie Bell
Sr., and a daughter,
Clara Geraldine
Bell.
Survivors include sons and daugh-
ters-in-law, Raymond and Dot Bell,
Locust Grove, Gumie, Jr. and Glenda
Bell, Jefferson; daughters and sons-
in-law, Mary Jim and Don Commer,
Cumming, Barbara and Bobby
Brooke, Thomson, Rebecca Sue and
Ronnie Gee, Jefferson; sister, Mary
Estell, Fayetteville; 14 grandchil
dren; 15 great-grandchildren; and
five great-great-grandchildren.

Linda Savage, 60, of Jefferson,
a former resident of
Lawrenceville, died
Saturday, October 6,
2007.
A native of
Stephens County,
she was the daughter
of Robert Chitwood
of Jefferson and the
late Jennie Sue Dooley Chitwood.
She was a member of the Center
United Methodist Church and a
former member of Hog Mountain
Baptist Church. She was a home
maker.
Survivors in addition to her father,
include her husband, Bobby Savage,
Jefferson; children, Angie Iler and
James Culpepper, both of Jefferson,
Lesley Huckeba, Lawrenceville;
brother, Ken Chitwood, Buford; and
eight grandchildren.

Eugene Talmadge Smith, 74, of
Cleveland, died Thursday, October
4, 2007, at his residence, following
an extended illness.
Born on October
18, 1932, in Jackson
County, he was the
son of Estelle Hayes
Smith of Bethlehem
and the late Curtis Smith. He was a
retired Baptist minister and a mem
ber at Center Grove Baptist Church.
He was a veteran, having served
in the United States Air Force. Mr.
Smith was preceded in death by a
son, Robert Smith; brothers, Jack
Smith and L.C. Smith.

er include his wife, Sarah Casper

Canon
Mary Ruth Jones Bryant, 75, of
Canon, died Monday, October 1,
2007, at Athens Regional Medical
Center in Athens.
She was born in Jackson County
on August 13, 1932, and was the
daughter of the late Ira and Berdie
Huff Jones. She was a waitress and
was of the holiness faith.
Survivors include her husband,
Horace R. Bryant, Canon; a son,
David Bryant, Hartwell; daughters,
Virginia Bruce, Pendergrass, and
Judy Reddish, Jefferson; sister, Tina
Kinne, Rome; eight grandchildren;
23 great-grandchildren; and four
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Thursday, October 4, in the cha
pel of Pruitt Funeral Home with
the Revs. Dennis Kesler and Johnny
Stowe officiating. Burial was in the
Oakview Cemetery in Canon.
