Elliott named Most Popular Driver 2018
By Bob Christian
bchristian@dawsonnews.com
Chase Elliott topped off his third
year in the NASCAR Monster
Energy Cup Series by winning the
Most Popular Driver award on
Nov. 29 in Las Vegas, Nev.
The award is presented by
the national Motorsports Press
Association. This is the first
time that Elliott has won the
award in NAS CAR’s premiere
series after having won the
award back to back in 2014 and
2015 when he drove in the
Xfinity Series.
The award was presented by
Dale Earnhardt Jr .who, before
retiring from active racing at
the end of the 2017 season, had
won the award 15 years in a
row. Prior to Earnhardt Jr.,
Elliott’s father, Bill Elliott held
the award for a record-setting
16 years.
Winning the award comes on
the back of a break-out season
for 23-year-old Elliott as he
recorded the first win of his
career at Watkin’s Glen Aug. 5
and raced his way into the
Chase for the Cup playoffs
round of 8, picking up two
more wins along the way at
Dover International Speedway
on Oct. 9 and Kansas
Speedway on Oct. 21 to finish
the season sixth overall.
Elliott drives the No. 9 car
for Hendricks Motorsports and
was the only member of the
team to post a victory in the
2018 campaign.
Elliott joined the Sprint Car
Series full time in 2016 when
Hendricks Motorsports
announced that he would drive
the No. 24 car previously driv
en by Jeff Gordon.
In his debut at the Daytona
500, Elliott became the young
est driver in Daytona to capture
the pole with a qualifying
speed of 196.341 mph.
Although he did not post a win
in the 2016 season, Elliott
amassed 10 top-five finishes
(including two second place
runs) and won the 2016 Rookie
of the Year Award.
2017 opened with Elliott

The rain on Saturday might have
canceled the Dawsonville Christmas
parade, but it wasn’t enough to stop
hundreds of families from coming
to Rock Creek Park to eat breakfast
and meet the one and only Santa
Claus.
Dawson County Parks and
Recreation hosted the annual
Breakfast with Santa event Dec. 1,
with proceeds from the event going
to K.A.R.E. for Kids to make
Christmas magic happen for under
privileged children in Dawson
County.
“This event would not be possible
without the efforts from the local
businesses and organizations that
took time out of their Saturday to
fight the nasty weather and give
back to our community,” said Buffie
Hamil, programs and facilities coor
dinator at the county parks and rec
reation department.
