Uncle Shucks com maze to open Sept. 10

This weekend, Uncle
Shucks Corn Maze and
Pumpkin Patch in Dawson
County will open for its 2022
season, showcasing a new
maze design that celebrates
Georgia and its local agricul
ture and crops.
According to owner
Mathew Hughes, the idea for
this year’s maze theme first
came about when he noticed a
“Georgia grown” sign in a
local grocery store.
“It wasn’t planned really;
we were in the grocery store
and you see all of the
‘Georgia grown’ signs and it
just made us realize that
Georgia is doing pretty good
considering everything that’s
going on and I don’t think
people realize that, so that’s
where our design came from,”
Hughes said.
The maze design includes
the state of Georgia and the
phrase “Georgia grown”,
along with representations of
several of the biggest crops
that are grown in the state, he
explained.
“We did the state of
Georgia and it says ‘Georgia
grown’ at the top, then it’s got
a chicken because Georgia
produces 1.38 billion head of
chicken per year, the peanut
which is 1.65 billion pounds
per year and is actually what
half the country uses, the
blueberries which is 300 mil
lion pounds each year, and
then of course peaches,”
Hughes said.
One of the goals of the
design, he added, is to bring
awareness and appreciation to
the crops grown in Georgia
and the farmers who grow
them.
“I think Georgia is doing
great considering everything
that’s going on; we wanted to
show our appreciation and
bring awareness to what
Georgia actually does,”

Woman accused
of vehicular
homicide, DUIs
after fatal wreck

A local woman has been charged follow
ing an investigation into a fatal July car
crash in southern Dawson
County near Lake Lanier.
Sarah Spinella Caudell,
37, of Dawsonville, was
arrested by the Dawson
County Sheriff’s Office on
Aug. 26 and charged with
two felony counts of first-
degree homicide by vehi
cle; two charges each for
alcohol-related DUI less safe and DUI .08
grams. Caudell also received citations for
not wearing a seat belt and failing to main
tain lane.

Cloudy skies and wet conditions didn’t put a
damper on the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame’s
annual Labor Day car show on Saturday, Aug. 3,
which maintained a strong crowd throughout the
day and included an event held by the Special
Needs Apostolate of Christ the Redeemer
Catholic Church.
An array of cars — some familiar to local car
show attendees and others new to this event —
were on display. Highlights included a white
1930s Ford coupe with a fully dressed model
driver, a metallic dark green Pontiac with a
matching interior and a Vietnam-era military
vehicle.
