How do we measure it? By the benefits that it con fers. Wealth is not necessarily the yardstick, for mian may be suc cessful and never be rich, or he may be rich and fail, to find success. True success is measured not by dollars but by service and character, understanding, and work. These are the elements of each individual’s success. J. McMullan Sees Col. Sanders, Butz BY LEROY WHITE Recently Judy McMullan at tended the 53 rd annual 4-H Congress held in Chicago, from November 29 th thru December 6 th, as a state winner in pub lic speaking. Her encounters and memories are not few. Some of her fondest memories are: ■—Get-acquainted dance —Staying in the largest ho tel in the world (Conrad Hil ton) . —Pop concerts conducted by Arthur Fielder. —-Meeting Col. Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken. —Seeing the tallest building in the world (Sears Tower). —Banquets. —Hearing Miss America and Earl Butz speak to the group. —Meeting the donor of her trip (Union Oil Co. of Califor nia) . —Radio and television in terviews. '—Live entertainment at each meal. —Witnessing her first rodeo (the qmnual Livestock Exposi tion) . —Another first, meeting, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. -—And then encountering the saddest moment of the trip, the farewell dance. Also attending the trip were Tom McCall and Roger Adams. Adams was named national win ner in the 4-H Dairy program, and was awarded a $709 schol arship by the Insurance Comr- pany of North America. JURY McMULLAN Georgia Power Co. Sponsors Editorial Award In State The Georgia Power Com pany, for the 13 th consecutive year is sponsoring its Jack Mc Donough Editorial Award com petition for Georgia high school students. The competition, named in honor of the utility’s retired board chairman, recognizes the high school junior or senior who writes the best editorial on free enterprise in America and has the editorial publish ed in his school newspaper during the 1974-75 school year. To be eligible, editorials must appear in the newspaper that are members of the Geor gia Scholastic Press Associa tion. The contest winner will re ceive a $75 ! 0' scholarship to the University of Georgiaj’s Henry W. Grady School of Journal ism, a plaque / and an electric typewriter. In addition the teacher of the winning stu dent’s newspaper will receive an electric typewriter. There is no limit on the number or length of articles an individual or school may sub mit. Recipe For A Very Merry Christmas Use one crisp-cold December night topped by sparkling stars. Add a pinch of frost and a layer of crunchy snow. Prepare a crackling hot fire place. Sprinkle in some holly and a dash of fir. Mix gently with a prepara tion of family and friends. Top this mixture with the joy of a get-together. Let simmer in the warmth and good will of each one’s heart. Season with a few smiles and a bushel of love. Set before an evergreen tree tinseling with silver and topped by the star of hope. The annual lottery will be held and young men must continue to register and local boards will classify them as to their availability for pos sible military service. These young men have three obligations: (1) They must register within a sixty-day per iod beginning thirty days prior to their eighteenth birthday. Elbert Countiane may register with Major Lee Abbott, Na tional Guard. Armory in Elber- ton, Georgia. (2) they must notify their local board of any permanent address 1 change, and (3) they must carry their status cards with them until their liability expires, which for most men, is age 26. There are also three important years to remember: At the age of 18 you must remember to regis ter; and at age 19 the lottery number is to be drawn, and at age 29 1 this is the prime year of vulnerability to draft (each year thereafter, chances of ever being called are considerably lessened). 28 Girls Chosen Sr. ROTC Sponsors The R.O.T.C. These young ladies have va rious responsibilities in the R. Anchor Club Taps Two for Honors The Anchor Club of Elbert County High has announced their Captain and First Mate for the month of January. They are Kit Brown and Rhon da Bell, both seniors here at E.C.H.iS-. Kit is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Julian T. Brown, Jr. He is a member of the Key Club, the Devil team and is also the photographer for the school’s annual. Rhonda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Bell. She is a member of the National Honor Society, president of the international Relations Club, Treasurer of the Mu Alpha Theta Club, and Secretary of the Alpha Beta Club. The An chor Club is proud to have these two seniors and their contributions to the school. VOT Sends Toys To S. R. Hospital BY DONNA WILLIS The Vocational Office Train ing (VOT) Club will deliver toys to the Scottish Rite Hos pital in Atlanta on December 21. They will also take other festivities and sing carols while there. The children receiving the gifts will range in age 1- 16 years. The following clubs are sponsoring and making the projects possible: VOT, Athena Tri-Hi-Y, Spanish, FBLA, VICA and Alpha Beta, feelst that his club is, taking on feels that thas club is taking on an honorable project that will not only bring recognition to the club but ECUS as well. We feel that all clubs sponsoring this project are to be commend ed for their time and giving unselfishly. O. T. O., department. They boost the morale of the men, serve at various dinners and luncheons as hostesses for vis iting inspectors, are honorary members of the Blue Sword, and most important of all, plan and carry out all activities sur rounding the Annual Military Ball. ATHENA TRI-HI-Y HONORS HOLIDAYS BY JULIE GRIMES The Athena Tri-Hi-Y has been busy this month preparing for Christmas, Their projects in cluded a party on December 12 for the children of the E, C. H, S. faculty. The children were entertained with music, stories, games, and food re flecting the Christmas mood. A Christmas Mailbox was spon sored by the club and was set up in the lunchroom. “It’s Christmas Everywhere” was the theme for past weeks. A poster gallery was on display depicting Christmas greeting in foreign languages. Each morn ing on the P. A. system mem bers of the club told how Christmas is celebrated in a selected country. Other an nouncements told of Christmas legends. 'Some of the legends discussed were the Christmas tree, stocking, tinsel, greeting cards, and mistletoe. The club took up a collection of toys to be contributed to the VOT toy drive. These toys will be taken to the Scottish Rite Hospital Children Hospital in Atlanta bn December 21. At the annual White Christmas program the Athena Tri-Hi-Y sang Christmas carols. The club has also organized a basketball team to play dur ing the month of January. The first game is on January 4 and E. C. H. S. will be hosting fifteen other schools on that day. The team will be playing Greene County Tri-Hi- Y girls. Two representatives, Patricia Griffith and Edie Hall, are now preparing for Youth Assembly in Atlanta. With the help of local attorneys the two are writing up a bill. Christmas Christmas is a great time, Christmas is a religious time, Christmas is a giving time, Christmas is a receiving time, Christmas is the greatest day of all. But most of all, Christmas 1 is God’s day, Greatest day of ALL. ’ —By Mike Wallace.
