RABBI STEPHEN S. WISE, found
er of the Free Synagogue of New York
City, and widely nown for his oratorical
powers and his leadership in many fields
of humanitarian effort, when recently
asked to prepare a list of ten outstanding
Rabbi Stephen S. Wise
former president of the Phoenix Club, a
director of Temple Beth El and a member
of the Detroit Real Estate Board of
Commerce and the B’nai B’rith.
PREMIER PERA ZHIVKOVITCH
of Jugo-Slavia, in replying to greetings
from a delegation of Jews who called on
him recently to express graitude of Jugo
slavian Jewry for the recently promul
gated Jewish religious communities law,
paid warm tribute to the loyalty and
patroitism of the Jews of Jugo-Slavia.
SH. VANDENBERG, a member of
the Upper House of the Dutch Parlia
ment, has been appointed as the Non-
Zionist representative on the Jewish
Agency from Holland. The appointment
was made by the Permanent Commission
of the Holland Jewish community to
gether with the council of the Portuguese
Jewish Community.
CAPT. SYDNEY G. GUMPERTZ
of New York, one of the Jewish heroes
of the World War, was among the thirty
Medal of Honor men who were special
guests of the American Legion’s annual
convention in Boston. His notable
achievemnet “of desperate and extreme
courage above and beyond the call of
duty" was performed in the Bois de
Forges, September 26, 1918.
religious leaders in this country of all
creeds, included only one Jewish name,
that of Rabbi Henry Cohen, of Galves
ton, Texas, who is virtually unknown out
side of the South. Dr. Wise’s selection
caused considerable comment but his
magnanimity in exalting an earnest and
hardworking, if little known, colleague,
only establishes the more his own pre
eminence as a religious leader.
HERBERT H. LEHMAN, Lieuten
ant-Governor of New York, was recently
renominated for the position by the Dem
ocratic State Convention meeting in New
York City. Lieutenant-Governor Lehman
is completing his first term, having been
elected in 1928. Formerly a prominent
banker, he is actively connected with
many of the most prominent Jewish or
ganizations in the country, including the
Joint Distribution Committee, the Jewish
Agency, and others.
ANDRE MAUROIS, famous French
Jewish biographer and novelist who will
lecture on French literature at Princeton
University for four months, arrived re
cently on the S. S. lie de France. He was
accompanied by his wife, Mine. Maurois.
ABE GOLDBERG, junk-dealer of
Seattle, Washington, won a victory over
Washington officialdom when Secretary
of the Navy Adams finally gave the
Jewish “Admiral" permission to sell the
obsolete cruiser Charleston, which he
bought for junk some time ago. Tlv*
question of the sale of the scrapped war
ship had to be submitted to England,
France and Japan before the United
States could sanction the plans for dis
posing of the steamship.

B. SMOLAR, who during the past year
and a half acted as special correspondent
in Russia and in other East-European
countries, declared on returning to this
country that "in no country in Eastern
Europe is the situation of the Jews today
a favorable one. But worst of all is the
situation in Poland, which contains the
largest Jewish community in Europe.”
JOSEPH L. SELLING, long promi
nent in Jewish charity and welfare activi
ties in Detroit, and a former president
of the United Jewish Charities there, died
recently at the age of 62. He was a

lanthropist, are founding The Neighbor
hood Playhouse Studios to be devoted to
the teaching of the various arts related
to the theatre. The curriculum will in
clude dancing and music, and the pupils
of the school will be afforded an oppor
tunity to appear in the Neighborhood
Playhouse forthcoming productions of
symphonic music.
RABBI JOSHUA L. GOLDBERG,
spiritual leader of the Astoria, New
York congregation was honored by hav
ing a fund of $10,000 subscribed to in
appreciation of the completion of his fifth
year of service at the Astoria Center of
Israel. The fund will enable the Rabbi
to carry out his plan of activities pre
sented bv him to the Board of Trustees
for 1930-31.
REV. JOHN HAYNES HOLMES,
pastor of the Community Church and
noted liberal preacher of New York, in
an interview with Evelyn Seeley of the
“New York Telegram” with regard to
the discrimination which prevails against
Jews in New York City, stated that “a
good part of anti-Semitism is the
prejudice of defeat. The Jew has gained
leadership in ownership of real estate,
ownership of newspapers, theatre man
agement and in many trades and an edu
cational campaign which would teach
Gentiles to understand the Jew’s back
ground and experience, should be con
ducted to offset prejudice.”
DR. JULIAN MORGENSTERN.
president of the Hebrew Union College,
at the opening exercises of the College,
stated that world Jewry must desert the
paths of unreasoning partisanship for
those of true vision, and admitted that
reform Judaism has by no means com
pletely solved the problem of Judaism,
adding also that Zionism, like Reform
ludaism, is indispensable to Judaism.
LOL T IS ECKSTEIN, publisher and
capitalist of Chicago paid almost $140,000
of the deficit of the Ravinia Summer
Opera. Mr. Eckstein gave assurance that
the Ravinia Opera would continue as long
as he lives, although the project, which
brings famous artists to Chicago, has cost
him large sums every year.
