Yorra of Atlanta will take place at
10:30 a m. Saturday, Dec. 31, at
the Temple. A congregational
kiddush will foUow. James is the
son of Arnold and Louise Yorra
and of Elaine Yorra. He is the
grandson of Ida and Abraham
Yorra of Miami and of Mr. and
Mrs. Mark Sauls of Phoenix.
Israeli beauty queen, Rina
Messinger, former Miss Universe,
is writing a book about her year as
the reigning international beauty
queen. Evidently the time she spent
in that position was not all milk
and honey and turned out not to be
a short-cut to wealth. “I could have
made more money as a secretary
than I did as Miss Universe," she
stated, "but my clothes and
traveling expenses were paid for."
Another interesting fact about the
beauty queen is that she taught
aerodynamics in the Israel Army
and flew a glider—but never
learned to drive a car!
Steven Urken
Dr. Moshe Avital has been
named director of the Department
of Education and Culture of the
World Zionist Organization—
American Section, in New York.
Dr. Avital, who has served the
department for the past eight
years, succeeds Dr. Abraham P.
Cannes who recently retired.
Dr. Abraham Geffen, formerly
of Atlanta, was recently presented
the City of Peace Award at a
testimonial dinner in his honor
given by the Beth-El Synagogue-
Center in New Rochelle, N.Y. A
former vice president and member
of the board of trustees of the
synagogue. Dr. Geffen is an active
member of its Israel Bond
Committee and has been chairman
of the Physicians Division of the
Federation of Jewish Philan
thropies of Beth Israel Medical
Center. Dr. Geffen is senior
attending radiologist and former
director of radiology and radiation
therapy at Beth Israel. He is also a
professor of clinical radiology at
Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. Dr.
Geffen is the son of the late Rabbi
and Mrs. Tobias Geffen of
Atlanta.
Elmo Ellis, vice president and
general manager of Atlanta’s WSB
Radio has been selected for
inclusion in the June 1978 edition
of “Who’s Who in America.”
Nationally known in the broad
casting field, Alabama native Ellis
recieved tbe Abe Lincoln Award of
the Southern Baptist Radio-
Television Commission earlier this
year. He has also received the
Peabody Award, Broadcast
Citizen of the Year Award,
Freedoms Foundation Gold
Medal and the Abe Goldstein
Human Relations Award.
David Nicholas of Atlanta
has been promoted to senior
Investment officer by the First
National Bank of Atlanta.
Nicholas joined First
National in 1973 as a credit
analyst and was later promoted
to assistant Investment officer
and then investment officer.
Nicholas and his wife, the
former Paula Goldman, of
Macon have two chBdren.
Egyptian President Anwar
Sadat’s personal physician, Dr.
Mahmoud Attiya and
Iladassah cardiologist Dr.
Bernard Lewis who was in
London recently with Israeli
Premier Menacbem Begin,
confer at Hadassab Hebrew
University Medical Center. Dr.
Attiya was tbe first Egyptian
doctor to officially visit the
hospital since 1948.
Mr. and Mrs. Steve Elliot
Scheer of Savannah announce the
birth of a daughter, Mollie Elaine,
on Nov. 16.
Olympic decathalon champion
Bruce Jenner and former Brooklyn
Dodger great Roy Campanula
highlighted a benefit for the
Munich Eleven Memorial
Scholarship Fund held in New
York in memory of the II Israeli
athletes killed by terrorists at the
1972 Olympics.

Dr. Ron Schwarz of Atlanta was
recently installed as president of
the Greater Atlanta Veterinary
Medical Society. Dr. Schwarz has
served on the executive board of
the society for the past four years.
He is the son of Erwin and Sur
Schwarz of Atlanta.
Alien Soden, local sales
manager for Atlanta’s WSB
Radio, Jogs, radio in hand,
through his Doraville
neighborhood. Soden claims
he's doubled his distance since
bringing the radio along as he
runs.

Rabbi William Berkowitz,
spiritual leader of Congregation
B’nai Jeshurun in New York City,
was elected national president of
the Jewish National Fund of
America at the recent biennial
meeting of the JNF Board of
Directors held at JNF House in
New York City.

Black, Richard Radetsky, Heidi
Rosenberg, 10th grade; Susan
Gordon, Ellen Krause, Sherri
Meddin, Brenda Toporek, 11th
grade; Andrea Blair, Vicki Hirsch,
12th grade.
Michael Kam, son of Enid and
Hal Kam of Atlanta, has been
admitted to the Bar in Georgia.
Kam completed his undergrad
uate work at Duke University and
is a graduate of the University of
Georgia School of Law.

David Goldwasser has been
named by the Georgia Council for
the Arts and Humanities as a
recipient of a 1978 Governor’s
Award in the Arts. Goldwasser’s
selection was for outstanding
contributions to arts services and
cultural support programs.
Civil rights leader Bayard Rustin (right), an early supporter of
Black African liberation movements, and Rabbi Arthur Herzberg,
president of the American Jewish Congress, hold a press
conference to introduce a report by Mosher Decter on Israeli aid to
Black African states entitled “To Serve, To Teach, To Leave.”
Rustin noted that Black African states had reacted with
“enthusiasm” to Egyptian President Sadat’s visit to Jerusalem.
