A YEAR’S SPINNING.
RY ELIZABETH BACEKTT XJKOWKTKO.
lle listened .it the porch that day.
To hear tho wheel go on, and on,
And when it stopped, ran back away,
While through the door he bronght the sun ;
But now my spinning is all done.
He sat beside me, with an oath
That love ne’er ended, once begun ;
I smiled—believing for us both
What was the truth for only one,
And now my spinning is all done.
My mother cursed me: that I heard
A young man’s wooing as I spun.
Thanks, cruel mother, for. that word,
i'or I have since a harder known ;
And now my spinning is all done.
I thought—O God I—mv1 —mv first-born's cry
Both voices to my ear would drown.”
I listened in my agony—
It was the snence made me groan !
And now my spinning is ali done.
Bury me ’twixt my mothei’s crave.
Who cursed ine‘oll her death-bed lone. ,
And my dear baby—(God it save !)
Who not to bless me would not mean, »
And new my spinning is all done.
A stone upon my heart anrl head,
But no name written on the stone *
Sweet neighbors i whisper low instead,
‘ This sinner was a loving one ’
And now her spinning is ail done *
And let the door r jar remain.
In case he should pn-s bv anon ;
And leave the wheel out very plain,
That ir/, when passing In the sun,
May sue the spinning is all done !

The Major General Commanding being com
pelled by wounds to relinquish, for the present,
the command ot the Department, takes this op
portunity to express to the officers and men of
the Coast Division, under Brigadier John P.
Hatch, his approbation of their good tan met
during the operations on (he line of the Charles
ton tfc Savannah Railroad, since November
last.
At the Battle of Honey Ilill, on November
doth, although unsuccessful in the attempts to
drive the enemy from his forts, the Division still
maintained the fight with unwavering steadiness
during the day, and retired from field after
night full in good order and unpursued. Their
losses attest their courage and discipline '
At peveaux‘s Neck, near the Coos.*uvh«itchic
turnpike, on December 6th, the advance, in
number much interior to .tins opposing force,
met the rebels in an open field, and drove them
irom the ground, captured one flair, forced them
to seek safety in flight, leaving their dead and
woupded in our hands, and thus occupied a po
sition from which the Railroad was under the
easy fire of our guns.
On December hth the skirmish line forced its
way to within a few yards of the Railroad and
the torts which guarded it. remained there un
der a most galling the until an opening had
been cut through the woods between our batter
ies and tiie road, and thus perfected the work so
gallantly begun upon the 6th.
1 lie I). vision has bbeyed all orders promptly

lantly watched the enemy at its front 8 has
promptly seized each fortified { ositi. 11 upon the
fiist indication oi a proposed withdrawal 011 the
psut of the rebels, and has thus inspired the
Commanding General with the belief tint it will
continue to do so faithfully and well the work al
lotted to it in the great campaign which is bem" r
prosecuted in Bomb Carolina. '
To Brigadier General- Hutch and Potter, who
have Commanded this fmc<* and to all the gal
