TBE ENOUAB ELECTIONS—TBE LIBERALS AHEAD.
Up to the evening of the 14th instant, the
mimber of Parliamentary contests comple
ted in England was 421. Os thebe the liber
als had 263 teats; and the consetvaiives 153.
Compared with the last Parliament, the lib
erals, according to the calculations of the
Times, have lost 26 and have gained 35 seats f
so that the net gain to tbe government thus
Ikr has been 9. Liberal gains are anticipa
ted in Ireland, and on the whole the Times
looks lor a great reinforcement to the liberal
cause.
The Morning Herald only admits a loss of
four conservative seats, and urges that this
loss is more apparent than real, as the un
seated members were conservatives only in
uame.
There were still twd hundred and thirty
three seats to be filled—mainly by the coun
ties—and the contests for these would extend
over another week.
Lord Palmerston was of course, returned .
for Tiverton, but he has % a conservative for ’
his colleague instead of a liberal, as for
merly.
Tne first two days’ voting for Oxford Uni
vet sity leit Mr Gladstone in a miuority of
twenty-five. The polling would continue
for three more days. In the view of the possi
ble failure of Mr. Gladstone at Oxford, the
liberals had nominated him as oue of the
candidates for the southern division of Lan
cashire.
The elections in some places bad been ac- ,
companied with rioting, but nothing of a
serious nature had occurred, and on the
whole they may be said to have so tar pusaed
off satisfactorily.
