Authorities think they convinced Abernathy
PENSACOLA, Fla. (UPI) -
Authorities here say they think
they have convinced the Rev.
Ralph Abernathy that the
apparent drownings of five
black Atlanta residents recently
were accidental.
Abernathy, head of the
Southern Christian Leadership
Conference, was taken on a
tour Thursday of Santa Rosa
Sound, where the five men
disappeared Nov. 30.

One more obstacle
WASHINGTON (UPI) — The only obstacle Nelson
Rockefeller has to face now in his quest for the vice
presidency is a vote by the full House next Thursday or
Friday. There was some concern expressed about the
endorsement of the merger of great wealth and power, but
the House Judiciary Committee Thursday voted 26-12 in
favor of Rockefeller’s confirmation.
10 people wounded
Ten persons were wounded and 15 houses destroyed by
Israeli artillery today in the southern Lebanese town of
Nabatieh. In a two-hour barrage before dawn, the Israeli
groundfire tore into three residential quarters and their
markets, according to witnesses.

PENSACOLA, Fla.—Rev. Ralph Abernathy, leader of the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference, arrives to investigate the drowning deaths of at least three and possibly five
Atlanta, Ga. black men in Santa Rosa Sound while fishing. Flanking are Rev. Otha
Leverette, local S.C.L.C., Bernard Lee, and Tyron Brooks, Abernathy’s staff members, and
H. K. Matthews local S.C.L.C. (UPI)

trousers, heavy underclothing,
two shirts, a sweater and a
lined jacket and tightly laced
boots,” Gaddy said. The boat
went down about a half-mile
from shore.
Abernathy and other SCLC
leaders had hinted at the
possiblity of foul play in the
disappearances.

the scene and spent more than
an hour explaining hesita-

tion,” said Roger Gaddy,
assistant director of the Es
cambia County Search and
Rescue Unit.
“I think he is convinced now
that it was just another boating
accident similar to many others
we’vehad around here,” Gaddy
said. x
In another development
Thursday, two more bodies of
the men were found. Two are
still missing.
The bodies of Robert Walker,
owner of the boat, and John
Sterling, were found Thursday.
The body of Marvin Walker
was found Wednesday about a
mile and a half from the site
where Robert Walker’s 19-foot
boat was found swamped last
week.
Still missing are the bodies of
Leroy Holloway and Lonnie
Merits.
Gaddy said, “The boat
obviously was overloaded and
there was a storm that
morning. The men were heavily
dressed.
“I’m a good swimmer, but I
couldn’t have made it to shore
with all that clothing 0n,.”
Gaddy said.
Tyrone Brooks, a spokesman
for the SCLC, had said Monday
there were “too many unan
swered questions” surrounding
the case. He described the area
as a “very hostile area for
blacks.”

Advertising pays
during hard times
NEW YORK (UPI)—
Companies cutting back on
advertising in recession periods
experience lower sales and
profits than firms which do not
slash budgets, a new study has
revealed.
The report, co-sponsored by
the American Business Press
Inc. and Meldrum and
Fewsmith Inc., is the latest of
three studies on the impact of
advertising during five
recession periods from 1947 to
1973.
The current study, covering
trends from 1968 to 1973, showed
companies which did not reduce
advertising outlays in 1970 or
1971 posted higher sales and net
income than concerns that did
cut advertising.
During the same period,
advertisers taking a more
aggressive posture in the midst
of a soft economy reported
comparatively better sales and
earnings once the nation
recovered its economic health,
the study said.
“The report dramatically
points out that advertising can
be effective — even in adverse
times,” said Charles S. Mill,
president of the America
Business Press. He urged ad-
vertisers to “Think before you
cut.”
Findings of the latest study
correspondence to results of the
two earlier reports that spanned
the 1949,1954,1958 and 1961 dips
in the economy, according to
Meldrum and Fewsmith.
The new research used 1968 as
a base year with a sales index of
100.00 for four groups of com
panies with varying stances on
advertising. The group that did
not cut advertising in 1970 or
1971 stepped up sales by 10.24
points and moved into first
place. Companies which
trimmed advertising in both
years showed a 2.72 increase in
sales while dropping into fourth
place.
In 1971 when the economy
improved, companies that
refused to reduce ad budgets in
both 1970 and 1971 reported the
highest jump in sales, ac
cording to the current research.
Although all groups had
better sales in 1972, the com
panies which did not cut ad
vertising in 1970 and 1971
showed sales gains of 40 percent
more than advertisers which
pared down outlays in the 1970-
71 recession, the study said.
