On opening of the safes and vaults
their contacts arc found, in most instan
ces, more or less preserved, aud iu some
.cases, heaps of charred leaves and melted
tin boxes are found together.
The rain which oommenoed at midnight,
still continues. It has extinguished the
remains of the fires, saving many thou
sand tons of ooal, and quelling all appre
hensions of further fires.
The gold in tho Custom House was
melted, and the greenbacks destroyed.

Galveston, Ocfc. 14.—One hundred
and twenty-five colored militia have ar
rived at Groesbeck. Business has been
suspended there, and all tho roads lead
ing to the plmoo are guarded, and none
fu-c allowed to pass out or in. Twenty-
five citizens have been arrested and placed
under bonds for their appearance before
Judge Oliver.
Much indignation is felt in regard to
the additional returns from tho 2d Di
vision, which give an iu ere use to Con
nor’s majority.
The Democrats have, doubtless-, elected
all four of the Congressmen.
Tho aggregate majority of the State
is estimated at 40,000.
Austin, October 14.—-Tlio Governor’s
proclamation of martial law was taken
up in the House. A resolution to sus
tain the Governor was opposed by many
leading Republicans. Tlumly, a Radi
cal from Galveston county, bitterly op
posed it, and said: “I shall vote against
the Governor’s-proclamation of martial
law, because I thing it illegal. I will not
be deterred from expressing my opinion
against the proclamation by the cry of
having gone over to the Democracy. I
shall vote against it because I am a Bo-
publican, and regard the proclamation as
destructive to the party, and subversive
of tho Constitution aud liberties of
tho people. The Governor has made a
mistake. I will not be compelled, under
a party lash, to indorse and ratify the
error. My county has increased its
Democratic majority from 100, two years

Huntsville, October 14—The Senate
Ku-Klux Committee, Senator Pratt,
Chairman, after sitting eight days in this
place, adjourned this evemng and go to
Montgomery, where they will remain
two or three days, then go to Dcinopolis,
Marengo county, where they will remain
a week, perhaps. They|cxumiued forty-
two witnesses at Huntsville, including
several of the principal publio men on
the Democratic side, who regarded the
country at peaceful. On the other tide
many persons, including negroes, were
examined, who testified to acts of vio
lence,

Janesville, October 14.—Gov. Fair-
child telegraphs that the appalling cala
mity has not been exaggerated. Over
three thousand men, women and children
aro now destitute. Tho loss of life has
been very great. Not less than five
hundred persons have been burned at
Poshtlgo and vicinity, and throe hundred
on the caatern shore. The men, women,
and children, who were maimed and
burned, aro now in temporary hospi
tals.

Tho President of tho Empire City
Company, which was reported yesterday
to have lost u quarter of a million, states
that it sustained no loss. It is reported
that the Western Uniou Telegraph has
effected a loan in Europe, and will cancel
four millions of stock. Douglass, of tho
Sappho, has challenged Samuels, of
Dreaduaught, to race twenty-five miles
to tho windward and bock in a ten knot
brige.
Bennett’s Dauntless offers the Dread-
naught u similar match.
New York, October 15.—Cotton was
heavy and lower early in the week, bat
improved at the close. Tho sales for
the week reached 80,009 boles, of which
75,000 bales were for future delivery,
aud 11,000 on the spot and to arrive.
Of the spot cotton, exporters took about
6,850 bales ; spiuners 4,725, and specu
lators 225 bales.
