Mahchanis' Kvc«an«.».—There is an absolute
necessity existing in this city for a merchants’
exchange. The importance of such a place for
interchange of ideas, prices, purchases and sales
by samples, Ac., is too evident for comment. No
city of the size and importance of Macon is so
far behind the age on this continent as this. Its
energetic merchants and business men will not
permit such a condition to exist much longer,
we hope. .
Dar Goons.—Oar merchants have done a good
wholesale trade daring the past week. Country
dealers eontinae to purchase largely. They find
that, owing to the fluctuation and uncertainty of
prices in New York, they can purchase of our

Pork PROsrxcTs.—Pork packing has commenc

Wc hear of no contracts, as the views of the feed

erable time will probably elapse before an agree

evident that fanners and feeders will have to make

The State Debt.—The action of the State con
vention, by which the war debt of the State was
declared null and void, has driven from the
mirket all State securities and circulation, ex
cept such as were issued prior to the passage of
the ordinance of secession. There can no longer
be any speculation In the “spotted” securities,
and of the old ones, there arc but few held at
home. It will be noticed that, according to Mr.
Cubbedge's quotations, there has been a decline
of two cents in gold, a slight advance in two of
the stocks in market, and advances in the quota
tions for the circulation of several of the depre
ciated banks. He reports plenty of money for
legitimate business purposes—especially for the
purchaso of the cotton offering. Gold 51; silver
