NEW YORK COTTON LETTER.
(Dally by Private Wire to Clerk & Co )
New York, Jan. 18.—The feature of
the day’s market Is the surrender of
a bear to the penalties of the fallacies
of his own reasoning. After an Illogi
cal campaign of several months, dur
ing which he denied the right of a
man to put his own price on hts own
property, and finally attempted to con
vert llntors Into sheetings and print
cloths, he proceeds to explain his re
tirement from bear activity. This
may seem a. little absurd, but the
price of cotton at tho present Is large
ly a matter of sentiment and not of
business. All this means that the
crop has been ginned as rapidly as
we have all alleged and that moderate
crop estimates will soon he confirm
ed, and the hears at last are prepar
ing to acknowledge. The situation
still justifies conservative buying at
11.60 and below for March and the
realizing of profits on good rallies.
