ewup the Sponge-
i me, Maud.,’
The'voice of the young man ircm
bled with the intensify of his passion
“From my home in the shadow of
.Bunker Hill monument 1 have come
•o plead with you, Maud. I have taken
a solemn vow that I will neither cat,
dr that I will neither cat nor sleep,”
he continued, “till this, the most
momentous question of my whole life,
is settled once for all.”
The glorious dark eyes ol the proud
Mohutncntal City girl sank beneath
the burning gaze. Her cheek glowed
with an unwonted flush, and she lap
ped the carpet irresolutely with her
foot. She was not to be won without
a struggle, but her heart pleaded for
the youth who stood before her.
“Mr. Blacksorrcl,” she said, “arc,
differences of temperament, irrecon
cilable prejudices relating to locality,
pride of ancestry, civil loyalty, and —”
"All these, Maud,” he protested
vehemently, “are mere straws that
loat on the surlacc, but arc powerless
to stay the progress of the irrcsistable
passion that sweeps me on and that
will bear you, too* on its bosom, my
proud beauty, in spite of the influence
that—”
“Have a care, Mr. Blacksorrcl!” ex
claimed the imperious maiden, her
eyes flashing. “The old Boston ideas
of coercion are—”
“Are distasteful to the patrician in
tolerance and majestic self-hood of
Baltimore’s blue-blooded nobility. I
know it, Maud. But love sweeps
away all bariers, levels all ranks, oblit
erates all local landmarks, and changes
the face of nature Itself."
The maiden shook her head and
sighed tremulously.
"Would—would it change deep-
rooted and inbred convictions and pref
erences, Mr. Blacksorrcl, as—as to
habjts of daily living, involving such
rjfttisijions as literature, recreation,
diet—”
"Diet!” he broke in "It would! It
would! With the communion of soul
with soul there would come to you nr
time a calm tolerance of that which is
leguminous and brain-producing.
With the longings of my heart satis
fied, I could raise my hand and swear
by every impulse of my being, every
fibre of my frame, that my physical
nature needed terrapin! Oh, Maud!”
he exclaimed rapturously, as he folded
the radiant Southern beauty in his
arms and drew her to his bosom, "ia
the arena of love have not Boston en
durance and habits of training triumph
ed over Baltimore even as—as—the
other day, you know, down in Missis-
ippi—in short, is not history repeating
itself?”
"It is, Harold,” she murmured, with
her head on the young man’s shoulder.
"I throw up the sponge.”—Chicago

A Word-Picture by Mrs. Lew
Wallace.
One of the pretty word-pictures
made by Mrs. Lew Wallace is her ac
count of the Ilosporous at that point
where the sweet waters ol Asia meet
the rapid currents of this river. Here
it is: "Would you have one day like
the stuff which dreams arc made of, an
idyllic day, that will stand apart from
other pictured memories .far and near,
go to the Valley of Sweet Waters, the
beauty spot of the Bosporous. In the
lazy afternoon it is the resort of lovely
ladies, pallid as lilies, robed
in vaporous draperies of snow
drift and thistle-down scented with rose
and musk- White veils, dim, mysteri
ous, hide their fares, all but swim
ming, lustrous eyes. Old what eyes
they have! Bright as stars, black as
death, dreamy pictures, they make,
reclining on the crimson cushion of
the rocVing carique, which is Jdraped
with India shawls or Persian hangings.
The armed slave in the stern is clad in
barbaric splendor, the rowers in wide,
white trousers and scarlet jackets, stiff
with golden embroidery. Greek boat
men, bearing the old names that can
nearer die.”-
