What a great meet ing ! Mr. Butch Jenkins and Mr. Steve Taylor of Southwest Georgia Training and Fitness Center of Ashburn and Sylvester were our presenters and did they ever do a great job! They urged and encouraged each of us to increase our opti mism and take control of our own lives. Butch said we need to believe that regardless of each bad condition we have, things can be better. You just look around when you are feel ing sorry for yourself and you see folks that have had just as bad of a time and if you were running a race, they would just run right by you. Butch and Steve said a positive attitude with just a little extra physical effort will go a long way. Butch and Steve talked on many issues. At our age walk ing is most important. You should create reasons to walk wherever you can. My doctor says walking releases endorphins that are our own stress relievers, mood enhancers, and sleep improvers. It is known that reg ular walking improves heart health. As you continue to walk you will feel motivated to keep on keeping on. Butch said, “You don’t have to be a marathon walker, just someone that makes the effort to get to the mailbox or the street cor ner, goes a long way.” Of course, diet and exercise go hand in hand. One must watch their cholesterol, weight, blood pressure, and it is never too late to start a healthy lifestyle. After the age of 50, men must watch their PSA lev els, for it has been said that all men will develop problems there if they live long enough. The large crowd was indicative of how well the community appreciates the efforts these guys talking today make to enhance our quality of life. Our own Connie Moore Wheeler presented beautiful piano music as the crowd gath ered and Betty Alexander and Cheryl Bradley greeted every one with a warm smile. Everybody registered for door prizes and they definitely all came away as winners. Brinson found these pill splitters that are the neatest things since sliced bread. Joyce Calhoun of Calhoun’s Produce sent prizes as well. We feel so appreciated! Mr. Brinson Brock, City President of South Georgia Banking Company gave a most warm and welcome talk to all. He spoke of difficulties of our current financial economy, and said now more than ever it pays to bank with a well capitalized bank and that our area banks were in good condition. He shared of the possibility of FDIC raising their insurance coverage to $250,000. Per depositor and pointed out that banks pay a premium on all deposits that fund this insur ance fund. He encouraged us to be wary of deals that were too good to be true from some institutions. It is safer to invest in banks that are well capitalized and have a reputation for the best of standards. He referenced the FDIC web site that has helpful information not only on the industry as a whole, but on par ticular banks. He pointed out that he was particularly proud of what could be found there on South Georgia Banking Company. Mr. Brock also said his door was always open, and he would be glad to spend time with any one who had questions or con cerns. That is one thing we Don Davis should be thankful for. SGB does have a group of trained professionals that it is easy to have confidence in. Thank you all so much! Brother Don Davis led us in prayer and did a splendid job. He reminded us that we all had much to be thankful for. Michael Holloway and John Dye recognized the birthdays UDC meets in The United Daughters of the Confederacy, Ben Hill Chapter #1137, Fitzgerald, Georgia met Oct. 1, 2008, 3:00 PM at the lovely home of Mrs. Myrtle Harper, president in Fitzgerald. Her home was beautifully decorated in the Halloween theme inside and the outside. The meeting was called to order at the stated time. It was opened with prayer by Imogene Wells. Salute to the Christian, American, Georgia and the National Confederate Flag was given. The meeting was opened in the ritualistic form. The members and guest were welcomed by the presi dent. There were two guests, Margaret Strom and Dale Couey. Barbara Billingsley was recognized for all the hard work that she had done for the chapter. The minutes were read and approved. The treasurer report was given and was accepted. The assistant regis trar gave her report; there were two prospective members pre sent and information was give to Dale Couey. The program was given by Myrtle Harper on the Objective of the organization along with a short history of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Evelyn announced about the motor coach trip to Fantasy Village at Pine Mountain. The trip is open to Prime Timers and their friends. Even non members can go on this one. Phoebe’s Golden Key has joined us in offering this trip for anyone that wishes to go at a special rate. We will leave Dec. 9 from South Georgia Banking Company at 11 o’clock in the morning and will travel to Pine Mountain to arrive at 3 PM for an hour. If you do not care to shop, you can rest at the Mountain Creed Lodge, where we will have a wonderful din ner at 4:30. We will depart at 5:45 and arrive at Fantasy Village at 6. At 6:30 PM we will be going to see the beautiful light display. We will depart around 8 PM and be back to SGB parking lot around 11 PM. We will have the police to watch our cars and be there when we get back. This is a trip with very little walking, and I know that will help some of you decide to go. The whole trip including the luxury motor coach, dinner, the tickets to the show will be only $70. As you know, with the price of gas and everything else, this is a bargain. Thanks again to our friends Butch and Steve, for a wonder ful program, and most of all South Georgia Banking Company! They do care! Fitzgerald, discusses history to include all the states instead of the few. They moved the UDC office from Nashville, Tennessee to Atlanta. There were three ladies that did not like the motto and the one that was accepted was “Think, Love, Pray, Dare and Live”. The five pointed star was accepted with each point representing a word of the motto. The colors accepted were White, Red and White. The color white representing Truth, Red the Sacrifice and White again Purity. The flower accepted was the open cotton boll. The emblem the star is the open cotton boll in the five pointed star. It was most inter esting. Imogene Wells read about the signers of the Declarations of the Independence, who they were and what happened to them after the signing along with the families. All were pretty well off and lost every thing or their lives. Barbara Billingsley read the poem” Little Griffin from Tennessee ” about a soldier on the battlefield. Under the old business, to help our community, doing for our library and museum and to contribute money to the muse um Under new business, the Original Charter, that is 100 years old, had started deterio rating and has been restored by taking out all the blemishes and put in a new frame. Two boards of wood of several original actual photos of some of the Union and Confederate soldiers with their names on the back. One was with the Union and one was with the Confederate pictures if approved by the museum will be placed there. Also five books of UDC ances tor names were given along with a cash contribution. With no further business the meeting was adjourned with prayer and in the usual form. Those present were Myrtle Harper, President, Barbara Billingsley, treasurer, Imogene Wells, recording secretary and assistant registrar, Mary Jane Espinosa, Margaret Strom and Dale Couey. SHERIFF’S ELECTION Sheriffs Election This Sheriffs election is not pri marily about me, Roy Wiley, nor my opponent. It's about Turner County and what's best for its citi zens. I ask the citizens to consider who is the most qualified to get the job done. In protecting and serving the public, I will be a Sheriff that is visible, available, dependable, and trust-worthy. As stat ed previously, I have no other business interest other than working for the taxpayers & citizens of this county in overseeing operations of the Sheriffs Dept, and County Jail. One of my goals for both the Sheriffs Dept, and County Jail will be to have employees that are highly dependable, hard-working, honest, and loyal as well as qualified. I believe it takes more than just one person to have an effi cient Sheriffs Dept. Each person must do their required job and come together to make the team. I will demand all officers and employees to give their best to help our Sheriffs Dept, make a significant difference against crime in this county. In regards to a rumor that I only want to serve one term, let me say this is untrue. If elected, I plan and will serve as Sheriff for as many terms as the voters of this county allow. Please consider me to be your next Sheriff and mark my name on your ballot. You may cast your vote during Advanced Voting now through October 31st or on Election Day, November 4th.
