Tlie first unit (Cl ings of a storm in the
ranks of the republican party are being
heard hero. So far Mr. Harrison has
apparently had it till his own way in ids
march towards a second nomination,
and none of Ids party have setjn lit to
attempt to make any organized opposi
tion to him, hut squalls are ahead for
him. This Week Representative Ear-
quliar, of New York, lias openly stated
hero his belief that Jiarrison could not I
possibly 1)0 elected, and an Indiana re
publican of prominouce lias said that
Harrison could not carry tiiat state.
Those are straws showing tho drift of
republican sentiment.
Tho Illaiuo men cannot he kept down
much longer They hate Harrison, and
ovory time that Russell Harrison's news
paper in its silly attempts to make glory
for Harrison, casts a slur upon lllainc
that hntred is intensified. These men
had rather see n democrat elected than
have to stand Harrison for another four
years, nnd, mark the prediction, in six
months they will bo shouting that senti
ment from tho house tops. Mr. Blaine
may bo perfectly willing that Mr. Harri
son should be renominated, although I
have serious doubts of it, but bis friends
are not. They hope of course to nomi
nate lilainc whether lie consents'or not,
but they are determined, as will be seen
before long, that In any event Harrison
shall not bo the nominee if they ean pre
vent it, and they think tlioy can. There
is music ahead ns sure us you urc born,
and with good management tho demo
crats can marcli to victory, keeping time
with it.
If the Opinion of leading members of
the party as expressed here lately, have
any influence with the democratic cau
cus of tho noxt house of representatives,
the next speaker of tlie house will
certainly be a southern man. These
gentlemen liavo argued tiiat tho south
is entitled either to tlie spcakorsldp or
to a place on the national ticket, and
that it would bo better politics to givo it
tho speakership. If a southern man is
to he »i>eaker it will probably lie cither
Representative Crisp, of CJoorgia; Rep
resentative Mills, of Texas, or Represen
tative McMillan, of Tennessee. Either
ono of them would suit me, therefore I
can speak of tlieir chances without
prejudice. Mr. Mills v;as largely in the
lead a month before tlie adjournment of
congress, hut it now looks as if Mr.
Crisp was ahead, and wore in not for tlie
liquor dealers national organization,
which, it is stated here, will bitterly
tight hint, 1 should select him as the
winner. Mr. McMillian lias surprised a
good many pe.,ple hy developing more
strength than lie had been credited with,
but his only hope of winning is in the
event of a protracted struggle between
the two first named candidates, which
many shrowd observers are now pre
dicting as certain to occur.
Government officials decline to ex
press any opinion for publication on the
report of tlie New Orleans grand jury on
the lynching of the Italians, but private
ly the universal verdict is "just what I
expected,” and many have recalled the
words of Edmund Hurkc. “A whole
people cannot be indicted.”
Senators Iirice, Vilas, Hill and Gordon
will all sit in the rear row of seats on
the democratic side when tlie senate
meets next December.
Venezuela lias accepted tlie recipro
city proposition made to her hy this
government.

Almost to Montgomery.
News of a most encouraging nature
continues to como in from tho work of
construction on tho S. A. & M. extension
to Montgomery.
The construction force yesterday were
wiGhln live miles of tiiat city and was
making flue progress, while tho track-
laying gang wero only ten miles behind
them, putting down rails at t lie rate of
a mile a day.
A prominent official of the road said
yesterday tiiat there was no doubt now
but tiiat tlie road would bo completed
and trains running into Montgomery
early in J line. Only a short gap now re
mains to bo closed, and tho thousand
men employed on construction will make
short work of this.
Tho completion of the S. A. & M. to
Montgomery moans more for Americus
than one could well imagino. It gives
to this city a through lino from the
west to tlie seaboard, * the management
of which is and will remain right hero.
Ainericus is progressing as no other
city in Georgia is, but the completion of
tills lino means a new era of progross
for her, such as she has never before
known.
