San Francisco, N^v. 21.—W. J
Campbell, who has just arrived bert
from Guatemala, brings additional tie
tails of the damage caused by the re
cent volcanic disturbance. In an in
terview Mr. Campbell said:
“There Is no clear idea yet of the
loss of life resulting from the volca
no's eruption, but f:om what I could
gather before leaving the country 1
believe that 5,000 natives have been
hilled. There was some talk at San
Jose, too, of some of the refugees
having been waylaid by robbers, and
I saw r.o instance of this. In fact
I bothered very little about anything
except the fact that I had been im
poverished and I took the first means
of getting back to this country. 1
heard at San Jose that President Ca
brera was trying to suppress the
news, but he could not reasonably
have expected to do anything like
that, for the evidence of ruin was ap
parent to everybody.
“Some of the coffee fiincas that have
been nearly ruined were worth more
than $1,000,000. The plantation of
Albert James, which was wiped out
of existence, had machinery upon it
worth $300,000, all of which was de
stroyed. Some months ago James re
fused an offer of $1,500,000 for th«
finca. Adolpfo Meyers’ finca, worth
$75,000 In gold, was entirely ruined.
Both of these fine places lay from 20
to 40 miles west of the volcano. Th 3
town of Quezaltenango Is practically
ruined, for the houses are cracked and
broken down, the people are moving
out and the neighborhood Is covered \
with sand and ashes."

system for parturition and thus shortening
labor. Tiie painful ordeal is robbed of it*
terrors, and the danger lessened to both
mother and child; the time of confinement
is shortened, the mother rested, and chile’
fully developed, strong ami healthy.
Morning sickness, or nausea arising
from pregnancy, is prevented by its use.
As pregnancy advances, the breasts en
large, become swollen and hard. Long
before the child is bora, they are prepar
ing for the secretion of milk. It is import
ant that they receive early attention.
Mother’s Friend softens the skin and
facilitates the secretion of Life Fluid,
Undeveloped breasts, liard-caked shortly
after delivery, are the result of non-
treatment, and likely to culminate in
Mammary Abscess, from which so many
suffer excruciating pain and are left with
these organs permanently impaired.
