Southeastern lakes are dif
ficult this time of year. Lake
water is cold and dense,
Spots and Largemouth Bass
are super deep and not all that
hungry. Of course, the big
reservoirs with Stripers are a
good target but can ab
solutely make a day difficult.
Let's try something. Go fly a
kite. What? It's quite a trip.
Gotta make necessary
reservations but grab a cou
ple or three buddies and head
for Deerfield Beach Florida,
charter a boat with the ex
pressed intent of flying a few
kites. OK, OK, I'll get to the
point by telling you of I day
trip I took once long ago at
the heavy recommendation
of an outdoor writer.
You see, during January,
especially when the cold
fronts lash out at South
Florida, it drives the Sailfish
down by the thousands and
they're always hungry. This
will take four guys, four reels
and a cooperative, experi
enced captain and a hard
working mate.
Whatayadoing?
We were in the area about
25 years ago taping an
'O'Neill Outside' TV show so
were the guests for this ad
venture.
In sight of the beaches
with your captain, you hook
up a live bait and it attaches
to a line with a kite. If the
wind is strong and the kite
rises, give it some line to
keep the bait on the surface.
If when winter wind slacks
and the bait drops, take up
some line. The bait has to
stay on the surface splashing
round. You're angling, not
just sitting in a seat waiting
for a rod to go down.
When the waves of Sails
cruise down, you'll see sev
eral try to get your bait chas
ing it all around below the
kite. As the fisherman, you
angle the bait, watch and feel
the bite, set the hook, the kite
loses its grip, and you fight
the Sail on light tackle. Now,
be assured, this happens con
stantly in January and part of
February, and you'll fight
many a Sail. The morning I
did this, I was alone and
caught and released 17 qual
ity sailfish. Good for every
one? I counted 40 boats and
practically all had a Sail on
the line. Be assured, I'm not
trying to take credit for hav
ing this idea and being such a
great fisherman. I had to be
shown everything, had not
done it before but will again.
Get a couple of friends to
gether and give it a try.
