Commerce Police Department arrests
Traffic stop leads to drug charges
Officers of the Commerce
Police Department made four
arrests last week, all of them
stemming from traffic offens
es.
Arrests made after Friday
afternoon are not included
due to the Memorial Day hol
iday. They will be published
in the Jan. 8 edition of The
Commerce News.
Not all of the charges were
traffic offenses, however.
Police charged Trent Renord
Bonds, 47,51 River Mist Circle,
Jefferson, and Michelle Lynne
Underhile, 38,160 Old Harden
Orchard Road, Commerce,
with possession of metham
phetamine.
An officer on patrol at about
1:35 a.m. spotted a vehicle sit
ting in the middle of Homer
Road and a male walking out
from the side of the road get
ting into the vehicle. The offi
cer followed the vehicle until
it “came to a better area for a
traffic stop,” the officer’s writ
ten narrative said, and pulled
it over.
He made contact with
Underhile, the driver, and
Bonds, the passenger and
asked her for her driver’s
license and him for his identi
fication. Both said they did not
have driver’s licenses on them
but would provide names and
dates of birth.
As dispatch ran that infor
mation, a second officer
arrived. Underhile, dispatch
said, had a suspended driv
er’s license, while Bonds had
no license. Dispatch also said
Underhile had a possible war
rant out of Commerce and
Jackson County.
After getting consent to
search the vehicle, the officers
reported finding a glass pipe
containing suspected meth
amphetamine wrapped in a
sock. Both Bonds and Under
hile denied ownership of the
device.
The search also turned up
Underhile’s wallet and license.
The wallet contained $1,987
in cash. Meanwhile, a search
of Bonds’ person turned up
$1,700 in $100 bills.
In addition to the felony
drug charge, the police cited
Underhile for driving with a
suspended driver’s license.
Other Charges
Others arrested or cited by
Commerce police include:
• James Luke Boutwell,
27, 1362 College Drive, Baton
Rouge, LA, speeding and driv
ing with a suspended driver’s
license. An officer pulled him
over on U.S. 441 at 9:36 a.m.
for driving 77 miles per hour
in a 55-mph speed zone. Dis
patch reported that his driver’s
license was suspended.
•Alexis Diaz, 29, 1047 Old
Airport Road, Commerce, run
ning a stop sign and driving
without a license. An officer
saw Diaz run a stop sign at
the corner of Carson Street
and Orchard Drive. When
the officer asked for his driv
er’s license, Diaz produced
his insurance card, passport
and two international driver’s
licenses, both expired.
Rent money
leads to dispute
between roomies
A dispute over rent money — or the lack thereof — led to
injuries to two women, but no arrests, according to a Com
merce Police Department incident report.
Police were called to a Hillcrest Drive residence where a
woman told police she and a roommate got into a dispute
over rent money she said the roommate owed. The room
mate retreated to her room, the other woman followed her
to continue arguing, at which time the roommate allegedly
struck the complainant in the eye and on the back of her
head.
Police observed a red mark under her left eye.
Another roommate, a male, told police that the com
plainant was “all up in her face” with the roommate, provok
ing the roommate into striking the complainant.
The complainant’s boyfriend also spoke to police. He
told them that the complainant was concerned about her
financial position because he (the boyfriend) had violated
the conditions of his probation and would be going to jail.
He said the complainant told the roommate that the rent
would have to be paid on time and that the house needed
to be cleaned. The boyfriend said the roommate’s response
was to threaten the complainant, resulting in the altercation
becoming physical.
The roommate was not at the scene. Police tried calling
her, to no avail, but eventually received a call in which the
roommate claimed she was the victim of an assault and was
injured. The officer told her to come to the police station to
tell her side of the story and have her injury documented. She
told the officer she was “on her way,” the report said, but she
did not arrive for several hours.
The report indicated that she did come in eventually and
was interviewed. The content of that discussion was not
included in the incident report.
Other Incidents
Other matters to which police responded up through early
Friday afternoon (subsequent incidents will be reported in
the June 8 issue of The Commerce News) include:
• a burglary at an apartment on South Elm Street where
the victim told police that someone stole all of his pots, pans
and food while he was in class at Lanier Technical College.
He estimated the value of the pots and pans at $200 and the
food at $100.
•possession of tools for the commission of a crime at
East Cordes Place and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. An offi
cer encountered a man and, noticing a bulge in the man’s
pocket, asked to pat him down for officer safety. The officer
detected what appeared to be a pipe, and the man conceded
that it was a pipe used to smoke marijuana, turned it over to
the officer and admitted that he’d come to the area to buy
marijuana. The officer took him to the police department to
be interviewed by a detective.
• recovery of stolen property at Fred’s, South Elm Street,
where the officer found an open briefcase with multiple docu
ments around it. An employee told police she found the brief
case, which contained multiple money orders and checks, in
the dumpster. An officer contacted the owner, who said the
briefcase had been taken from him the prior night. When he
picked it up at the police station, he told police that a firearm
and $5,000 in cash were missing. The Jackson County Sher
iff’s Office is also investigating the case.
• an agency assist on Blacks Creek Church Road where
Commerce police helped Banks County and other law
enforcement agencies apprehend a suspect in a double
shooting in Banks County.
•threats reported at Crestwood Mobile Home Park, Mays
ville Road. A woman said a neighbor came out of her resi
dence calling the complainant’s husband a bully. She said the
woman took pictures of her property, but never came onto
the property. The complainant said she called the woman
names and yelled back at her, but made no threats. The
perpetrator told police that she called the woman’s husband
a bully but that was all. She also said she thinks mobile home
park management is biased against her because she has filed
several complaints about the complainant’s husband, to no
avail. The officer advised both parties to avoid contact with
each other.
• a sick or injured deer at a Baxter Road residence. The
officer killed it with a shot to the head.
•a missing person at Northridge Medical Center. Police
responded to a call of a “suspicious” person only to find
that the man had walked away from the emergency room
