PROGRESS: In some areas the
_plan for integration of schools
~have been stepped up in order to
comply with the ruling of the
court to immediatdly present such
plan for consideration. In Nash
ville, Tennessee a United States
District Court Judge has taken
under advisement Davidson Coun
ty’s plan for a grade-a-year inte
gration. Knox County’s plan has
already been approved and is
ready to be put into effect in case
the county does not appeal the
decision. Chattanooga must pre
sent a plan before December 20,
and will have a hearing January
9 ... Last week seven Negro chil
dren entered two high schools in
Yancey County, North Carolina to
become the first integration in the
western part of the state. No
difficulty was experienced.
BIG SHAKE: The release on
bail of the Rev. Martin Luther
King shook the ranks of Georgia
Democrats to a considerable de
gree. Georgia Lt. Governor Gar
land T. Byrd, who was one of the
first of Georgia’s political brass
to endorse the presidential ticket,
expressed regret that parties close
to the presidential nominee had
seemingly brought pressure to bear
on what he termed the “orderly
court procedure”. It was also
reported that several top Demo
crats resigned honorary commis
