Westfield Hornets end season with 30-3 loss against Tattnall
By: PHIL CLARK
With the possibility of a re
match of last year's state
championship game just a week
Jown the road, the Westfield
HomeLs saw their dre;ims die under
i relentless Tattnall defense Friday
night at Jack Baynes Field on the
Tattnall campus. With their 30-3
win, the Trojans return to the title
game for the sixth time in the past
seven years.
Tattnall won the toss of the coin
to start the game, and deferred the
option to the second half. Westfield
then took the ball and appeared
ready to take control of the game.
The offense was able to move into
Tattnall territory on their first two
possessions, but were unable to
capitalize. But the defense was
playing well, holding Tattnall
without a first down the first two
times they had the ball.
Then on the Hornets' third
possession, they put together a
scoring drive, finally cashing in on
a 32-yard Alex CTambill Field goal
after the drive stalled at the Tattnall
12-yard line. During the scoring
drive, the Hornets got off what was
to be their longest play of the
game, a 30-yard keeper by
quarterback Matt Shepley. Fact is,
dial was the only run of more than
eight yards for the Hornets as
Tatuiall began to take control of the
game late in the second quarter,
using a 61-yard Matt McGee
scamper to abort the Hornets' lead,
and take a 7-3 advantage into the
dressing room at halftime. Still
anybody’s bail game.
Tsui as the Hornets offense
continued to sputter, Tattnall began
to gam control of the game, and
after a 32-yard Sam Griffin field
goal in the third quarter gave the
Trojans a 10-3 lead, big plays
became the order of the day. First it
was McGee, with his second long
run tor a touchdown, this one lor
37 yards, with ‘J; 14 left in the
game. That made it 17-3, and
Westfield still wasn't out of it But
they were forced to go to the air.

Records sre rrsdde for one
reason--To Be Broken!
By: PHIL CLARK
Show me a record, and I'll Show
you one waiting to be broken.
Many seem insurmountable, but
eventually someone comes along
and breaks them. Ruth's 60 homers
in a season. His 714 career homers.
At one time, both seemed
impossible to reach. But then
Roger Maris and Henry Aaron
broke them. Ty Cobb's career hit
total was untouchable. Until Pete
Rose came along. What about Joe
DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak,
you point out! Well, there's an
exception to every rule.
One record that was sure to fall
belonged to the late Wayman Creel,
and had to do with career coaching
victories in the GHSA. His 315 at
one time seemed destined to last
forever. Not Wright Bazeinore, the
legendary Valdosta coach. His 290
fell 25 wins short of Creel’s 315.
accomplished while coaching at
Northsklc Atlanta, Westminister
and Lakeside DeKalb. But along
came Dan Pitts of Mary Persons in
Forsyth. He began the season with
303, and twelve in a row this year
has given him a tie with Creel.
Pitts has a chance to break the
record this year, but it will be one
of the toughest in the 316 if he gets
it. j£ou see, his Bulldogs host AAA
number one Washington County
Friday night in a quarterfinal
matchup in the state playoffs. They
are currently ranked one and tltree in
the state, with Carrolton situated
between them.
Pits will get his 316. whether
it's this year, or whether he has to
wait until next season. He already
holds one state record. All of his
wins have come at the same school.
That eclipses Bazemore's 290 at
Valdosta from 1941 through 1971
When Pitts gets number 316 at
Mary Persons, he will move into a
lie for fourth on the national list for
wins at one school. With another
typical Dan Pitts season next year,
he could move past two more
coaches on the all time list for total
wins. He needs nine more wins to

catch E.B. Etter, a coach at several
Chattanooga schools, and the father
of former University of Georgia
place kicker Bobby Etter. Pat
Panek, who coached in Colorado
and Nebraska, has 328 career wins,
seventh on the alltime list. Dan
Pitts is in his 37th year at Mary
Persons, and shows no signs of
stepping down.
Another record that's sure to fall
sometime soon is the NBA m;irk of
938 coaching victories held by Red
Auerbach. Lenny Wilkens of the
Atlanta Hawks began die season
just a dozen wins behind Auerbach.
If the hawks could win half their
games before Christmas, they
would hand Wilkens a splendid
Christmas present. But with
personnel turnovers and new people
in the system, the Atlanta team is
playing well below Wilkens' career
winning percentage of .554. They
would need to win nine of the
remaining fourteen games between
now and Christmas in order to hand
Wilkens the new record before
Christmas. My guess is the record
will come sometimes in early
January, perhaps the second week.
Still, that's a remarkable feat for a
quiet, unassuming coach with
character and charisma to bum.
Wilkens has played for the Hawks,
now he coaches them, so a good
part of his career has been with the
franchise, though not in Atlanta.
Let's hope the Hawks can get
themselves straightened out, now
that they have rid themselves of the
troublemakers. They are a better
team for die moves, though the 4-8
record might not reflect it.
Auerbach's record will soon be
broken, just like Wayman Creel’s.
