was apparently contrary
to the team’s announcers.
They - it was either Don
Sutton and Pete Van Wieren
or Don and Skip Caray or
some combination thereof)
made it a point about two
weeks ago to tell us all
about newspapers - one
from New York, one from
Florida, and one or two I
believe from other parts of
the country, already pre
dicting their demise.
Personally, I thought the
newspapers were right and
the announcers, who were
of course taking the biased
stance of “it’s way too
early,” had brains about the
size of the gumball stuffed
into Chipper Jones’ mouth
(big but not THAT big).
But then I started look
ing at the “last 10” in the
standings.
“Holy cow,” I thought.
“The Mets were only 3-7
over the last 10 (and that
was as of late last week).
The Phillies were only ‘2-
8’!”
The Braves were 5-
5. Despite how bad they
sometimes look, blown
saves and all, that’s ground
“gained.”
“Now,” I’m thinking. “If
they can just get hot.”
Hence the term: “Go
NOW!”
Goodness gracious, I
must be delirious because
I’m starting to think like
Bobby Cox.
“If we get going. If we
get more consistent with
hitting and (the) bullpen.

Ty Whitaker, a Georgia Southern University pitcher,
earned a win as well as the game-winning RBI for
the Red Sox in Wednesday’s Middle Georgia Baseball
League contest.
KEY
From page IB
The Red Sox scored the
tying run as the White Sox
made a force-out at second
base. Chris Wilson, who
was on second base when
the play began, scored the
go-ahead run on an error at
first base.
In the bottom of the
fourth, Wilson, the second
baseman, was a big fac
tor in turning a Red Sox
double play with a strong
relay throw to first.
With the Red Sox up 6-
4 going to the bottom of
the fifth, Whitaker gave
up the tying runs without
a hit. He walked a batter
with one out, but struck
out Lester.
Another walk and wild
pitch put White Sox run

saying.
And, if the Braves need
further incentive, they can
go to Metsßlog.com.

one writes about the
Braves’ chances.
Writes another: “I know
how hard it is to make up
10-15 games and I don’t
think the Braves have the
heart to do it. And they
would have to jump over
three teams. It’s not gonna
happen.”
One more: “I stopped
worrying about the Braves
weeks ago. They are fin
ished this year.”
And finally: “The Braves
are Done. The Phillies suck,
the Braves are done, the
Nats ain’t going nowhere
and the Marlins are cute
and fun.
The Mets and Shea
Stadium is where it’s at.

And of course they go on
and on (and by the way,
there are actually some
“pro Atlanta” ones on
there).
Most of the Met fans,
believe they’re being smug.
But we know. For 14 years
they’ve watched - some
times at their expense,
sometimes at the expense of
others - the Braves win the
division. They’re scared.
It’s time. “Go now Bravos!
GO NOW!” (Note: Perhaps
they heard me - everybody
else in the building did.

over St. Louis, that marked
the second series in a row
they had won.)
ners on first and third.
With the runner on first
making a steal attempt,
there was a late throw to
second that went to cen
terfield.
That cut the lead to one,
6-5, and put the tying run
on third. That run hustled
home on a passed ball.
But it was a pair of walks
and a wild pitch that set
Whitaker up to break
another tied score on a hit.
Whitaker would also help
Brooks save his winning
effort by playing third base
and making a pair of clean
picks and throws in the
sixth inning.
Joyce’s home run was the
only hit the Red Sox had
in the three-run top of the
seventh as the table was set
by an error and hit batter.
The White Sox scored
in the seventh when Brad
Moody led off with a double
and Kyle Kersey singled.
